This lightweight jersey tee brings Bill Pickett into the present. Born in Texas in 1870, Pickett became one of the most celebrated cowboys and rodeo performers of his era. A working cowboy and skilled horseman, he became famous for developing and performing a cattle-handling technique known as bulldogging, eventually touring with the renowned 101 Ranch Wild West Show. His career took him before audiences across the United States and abroad, making him one of the most recognizable Black cowboys of the early twentieth century. He was posthumously inducted into the National Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1971.
The design pairs Pickett’s historic portrait with a subtle contemporary intervention, collapsing the distance between the cowboy of the archive and Black culture today. The result challenges the familiar Hollywood image of the American West without needing to rewrite it: Bill Pickett was a cowboy. Period.
